With LAHayeSIK™, the surgical field is downsized to include only the cornea. The LAHayeSIK™ Handpiece establishes a smaller, more concise surgical field boundary than can be achieved in conventional LASIK, which typically includes within the surgical field the patient’s eyelid margins, eyelashes, cul-de-sac tissues and surgical drape (if used).

These regions are sources of contamination, so isolating the corneal flap and stromal bed from them can help reduce post-operative complications, including infectious keratitis, and diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK).

The uncontained surgical field of the conventional LASIK operation may expose the highly absorbent corneal tissues to contact with the edges of the lid speculum, eyelid margins, meibomian gland secretions, eye lashes, conjunctival bacteria and surgical field micro-debris.
